And now that they have entered the Information Age, all they want to do is gobble up immense amounts of information that would not be of any use and does not make any difference to the lives they are leading.

Why do I say this? Hmm... Just take a look at the current blogging trend among the youths. Although this trend is not restricted to the youths only, they in particular are the ones using blogs to post nonsense on the web about their lives. Most of them just type what is roaming around in their minds, what they did for a particular day, what is bothering them or how they managed to clean the toilet bowl using their favorite fizzy drink left over from last night's party. Basically, teenagers rant on their blogs.

And the surprising thing is not the ranting, it's the fact that people actually bother to read these blogs and waste their precious time reading something utterly useless to them. I admit, I too am one of those who reads blogs for the fun of it (or for just getting a glimpse into someone else's life) but there has to be a personal limit to such wastages of time. I'm not one of those crazy people who survive on a diet of reading blogs for an hour each day and gobbling up information that would not affect them at all. Many would claim not be one from that category and yet the demand for this information is still there.

You wouldn't believe me if I say that there is demand for utterly useless information (Like how to clean a toilet bowl with your favorite fizzy drink) but hopefully, statistics would convince you. Take a look at the searches done for the phrase "toilet bowl" on Google. The statistics are provided from Google Trends, a service by Google which is still under construction. Surprisingly enough, the most searches for that particular phrase are from Singapore. And we're leading by a huge difference... Wonder why so many Singaporeans need to search on such weird topics. Anyway, my point is that among those few million searches done for "toilet bowl" online, surely a few hundred might be about cleaning toilet bowls with leftover fizzy drinks from last night's party.

Another case in point - my own blog. This very page you are reading is also one of those (among the few millions) that feeds people with utterly useless information. And the demand is still there. Just take a moment to look towards the right of the screen and scroll through the tagboard. You'd notice quite a few requests to me to update this blog (exactly what I'm doing right now...) even though I did write a few months ago that I wouldn't be posting anytime soon. Why would people want to read crap written by me anyway?

---------------------

Well, for those who were looking for an update on my virtual real estate, hope you guys are satisfied now. And hopefully get to realize that you just wasted about three minutes of your life reading my blog. You could have spent those three minutes, or hundred and eighty seconds doing something more useful in your life. (Damn, I just reduced my readership...)

Anyway, the reason I decided to break my hiatus away from this blog just for today is that I wanted to disprove Mariam - she said I'm "immune to the frequent update pleas". Haha... But by posting this post, I just disproved her.

And for all those of you who are posting rather uhm...interesting comments on my choice of "Under Construction" image, please refer to this page. It'd give you the reason behind my decision and also make you laugh with its humorous take on the conventional signs =)

Under Construction.

First of all, I'm sorry for the lack of updates recently. Since returning from OBM camp, I haven't really bothered updating this virtual real estate of mine.

Among the many reasons why this is so, (ask me about the rest personally) one is that I have been reading up on Web Design and using CSS to design sites. And have decided to take up the ambitious task of redesigning this blog. The book that I'm referring to, Web Standards Solutions, is really well-written and teaches extremely useful techniques in a concise manner - a good recommendation to any aspiring designers. I have also been reading up on other stuff, in an attempt to utilize my time during the holidays. But I shall not digress here...

Anyway, as I would be revamping this site for the time being, there probably wouldn't be any new content to read here. Tagboard and comments would still be active, though I doubt people actually bother using those. If you do come back, don't be surprised to see a mess of the layout and graphics here. And now for the official notice...

Under Construction.

On a side note, I'll be on holiday from the 8th of December onwards. Therefore, the site would probably be rotting here for a pretty long time as I would only resume work on it once I return.
And even then, I'd have to juggle that with school and my PDP.
And the rest of my commitments...

You get the idea...

City Lights and Chalk

Don't ask about the title, it's just random.

Went down to climb at Climb Asia with Ahmad today. Met a few other climbers there and did a few routes with them but didn't manage to get their names. And also because I don't want to rush into anything... We'll take it slow yea.

On a lighter note, I really enjoyed the evening out with her yesterday and had a great time =) It was nice walking around the city area and the riverside with her beside me and her hand in mine, watching the city lights and talking about everything under the sun (or rather, the moon). And she looked gorgeous in that Bohemian dress! (Heck, she looks good in anything! Even potato sacks.) The whole evening made me realize why I love her so much - because I can talk to her without having any inhibitions at all. She's such a wonderful person and that's what makes her so attractive. Well at least I know that if nothing works out, we two can still be <del>great</del> <ins>best</ins> friends.

(But wouldn't it be just better if things do work out?)

On a side-note, she has the most beautiful hands together with the most beautiful eyes ever. Her hands are just heavenly to hold, those delicate fingers interlocked with mine... And the time when we were comparing our hands, I realized what I've never noticed earlier - that she has the most feminine, the most pretty of hands. Aargh! Guess I won't get to hold those delicate fingers again...-->

Weird

Wikipedia was initiated as a project to provide an online resource for knowledge, that can be accessed and edited by virtually anyone. It has come under much controversy for the very reason that makes it such a great resource - it can be edited by anyone. Potential spammers (or just really bored people) can use Wikipedia to create entries with the intention to promote an individual or a group, or spread false claims about an individual or a group.

Because Wikipedia allows anyone to edit the content, many Edit Wars have broken out on their site. When someone's claim conflicts with another's the two parties engage in an Edit War to edit the articles on Wikipedia to match with their viewpoint. Most common amongst these are Edit Wars on spelling, statistics and usage of pictures. There's even a page on Wikipedia documenting the Lamest Edit Wars that took place. Now that's interestingly weird!

---------------------

And here's something else that's very interesting, but not as weird.

[via]: Nerve Endings Firing Away, [image source]: Flickr

Sometimes, I too feel like that guy who submitted this postcard.

Rain vs Haze

The really bad haze has finally (somewhat) been cleared, thanks to the rain.

But the rain now prevents us from going outdoors. Damn.

A Hazy Perspective

Today, on Saturday, the PSI index has been generally low throughout the day, ranging in the 60-ish range. So I thought I might post something related to the haze here. Below is a blog post from eyetoeye :: neogenesis :: blog, a blog managed by a guy named Kelvin.

Indonesia: Singapore Should Be Thankful For Haze (A Parody

The Haze hit unhealthy levels for the second time this year on Saturday, prompting public outcry against the lack of significant action from the Indonesian government to stop the occurrence of haze by taking effective measures against illegal clearing of forest land by burning. The Indonesian government responded by criticizing Singapore, saying that Singapore should be thankful for the haze.

"Singaporeans are always picking on us because they're so rich and think they're so powerful," said Indonesian minister Bibi Osman, putting on a military-style gas mask, "As a matter in fact, Singaporeans should be appreciative of what we're doing for them! It brings some excitement to their otherwise mundane lives, and also gives them something to care about, which they are clearly lacking in." Mr Osman also pointed out that the increase in occurance of respiratory illnesses also represented a significant boost in revenue for the medical industry. Speaking to No News Network, he said, "Singaporeans always complain about us but they never appreciate all the good things we do for them! It's outrageous!"

A survey of Singaporeans on the street found that Singaporeans hold differing opinions on Mr Osman's statements.

"I think he is right in what he said," said student Woo Ming Ta, "Before the haze, i didn't even know where Indonesia is. I thought it was the place in Middle Earth where Hobbits live. Now, thanks to all the news coverage, i finally know that actually, Bintan and Batam are part of Indonesia! My parents will be so thrilled to find out! Maybe the government should hold more hazes like this so that we can learn more about the world around us."

Other Singaporeans were not so sure. "I don't understand what so difficult about putting out a few fires," said university student Matthias Chua, who majors in Bio-engineering, "Can't they, like, just call in more firemen? Or maybe they should erect some giant fans that will blow the smoke somewhere else, like Australia."

[read on...]

-- Kelvin at eyetoeye :: neogenesis :: blog
Just in case some of you may start critisizing the article, make sure you understand the title first. It's a parody guys, take it lightly and with an informed viewpoint - satires and parodies offer much insight too.

The Much Wanted Update

In view of the recent comments posted on the tagboard *points to right* in a manner (or rather the language, in some cases) that was almost impossible to avoid, finally, here's the post.

So the EOY exams have finally come to a conclusion and life is supposed to be stress-free and back to normal, the keyword being supposed. Why? Well simply because right now, I'm living in constant fear of the coming Wednesday, the day when we get our papers back. And get to find out the stupid, silly, unexplained and sometimes, downright dumb mistakes we made. But then again, mistakes are a part of life and in the case of the exam papers, I would rather view them as learning points rather than mistakes. Obviously, no one wants to repeat that silly mistake of taking Volume of a sphere as four-third pi dee cube (yes, that's diameter and not radius) or writing RNA as DNA. But, I digress...

Anyway, as I was talking about life after exams, it really isn't as heavenly as I presumed it might be. During the onslaught of memorizing for exams, daydreaming of a life when I could anything I wanted and not be forced to study was normal but now that the time has actually come, I realize that it's actually quite boring.

Exams officially ended for me today... maybe because it was my miserable attitude towards history, or maybe because I'm just tuckered out from the exam period, but I just don't feel all "woohoo"-ish today. In fact, I felt kinda empty, like "now what?".
...
You know how sometimes there is this hype over what I am going to do after the exams. Well funnily enough, no one asked me what I was going to do. or if they did i gave them some half-baked answer. why? because i have no clue whatsoever what i am going to do. I even bet it is going to be like one of those holidays where i am going to spend a whole day wasting my life on youtube or watching TV till my brain rots.
-- Now What? by Jonathan

I can't help but nod away while reading Jonathan's post. Exams are over but I don't really have much planned for what I want to do during the coming weeks. Yea sure I have plans to go out and enjoy, read books that I wanted to but didn't get the time to, pursue hobbies that somehow just got left behind during the course of school and just enjoy the simple pleasures of life with family and friends. Don't get me wrong when I say I'm bored, I mean it in the sense that there seems to be no direction in life anymore. Maybe it's true that life is much easier to live when you're told what to do rather than given the independence to develop yourself individually but that's just a thought...

Okay enough ranting about that. Now, for what I have been doing in the fast few days, it basically revolves around staying idle and thinking. A lot. I've been thinking about the future and at the same time, having a sense of nostalgia and thinking about how my life has turned out to be what it currently is right now. It's hard to forget the events in life that have shaped you to be the individual your are today and it's even harder not to ponder on what the future holds for you. For now, I'll not dwell on this in this post. Maybe sometime in the future, because the entire collection of thoughts grant a post on their own.

---------------------

On another note, Google Reader is a fantastic RSS and feeds aggregator. For those of you who are clueless about feeds, let me take this opportunity to enlighten you on the next-big-thing in the virtual community. Feeds are like little packets of information that a site may create and then send to anyone who has suscribed to that particular site. So for those of you like me who follow many blogs online, this new technology is extremely useful because every time there is an update on any particular blog among those that you have syndicated or suscribed to, the updated post would be sent automatically to you and you can view all of these updates collectively in a feeds aggregator. For more information, this article would be pretty useful.

Google Reader is one such online application that syndicates all your feeds together neatly for you to categorize and view them as you please. Now, some of you may ask what sets google reader apart from other feed aggregators? Well, shouldn't the fact that this is a Google be enough to convince you? The new Internet Explorer offers the option of syndicating feeds too. He loves the Subway cookies sold here <var>[damn. they closed early today...]</var> and he loves the tonnes of interesting magazines stocked here.

They redesigned the Library recently and with that, they added in super nice and comfy armchairs, somewhat stylish chairs <var>[just for the appeal, I think]</var> and displayed a wider collection of magazines. Varun is relaxing in one of those super comfortable seats right now and yes, many people do have a tendency to fall asleep on these...

Anyway, Varun was reading Reader's Digest and he found this article on the brain's attention span. After reading that, he thinks he knows why his attention span is constantly criticized upon and credited for his low grades. Apparently, the brain doesn't just work as one complete thinking machine <var>[Like who didn't know that?]</var>. The different parts of the brain serve different functions, even during the same activity. So one's attention span is based upon many factors.

Varun found out that what he lacks in is his auditory attention, meaning he's unable to concentrate when being spoken to and tends to think of many things while having a conversation. Something in the conversation leads him to think of something else and that leads him to think of something, and so on. See, it's not Varun's fault that he doesn't listen or anything. He just tends to dwell too much indepth. =)

And yes, there is at least something he pays attention to. And that's visual detail. The article tells Varun that he's the kind of person who takes in tonnes of visual information and just stores it in his memory. He doesn't believe that he has a photographic memory but yes, he admits that he's the kind who pays attention to the details. <var>[And no, that wasn't meant as figurative speech...hahaha...]</var>

---------------------

Anyway, here's something from the magazine.

Attempting to locate a copy of the popular children's book Archy and Mehitabel, my wife called a bookshop. "What's it about?" asked the clerk.
"Well," my wife said, "it's about this cockroach named Archy who types stories about the adventure of his friend, a cat named Mehitabel."
As the clerk looked in his computer, he asked, "Is that fiction or nonfiction?"

<var>becquet.com</var>
<var>-- Reader's Digest, October 2004 issue, Page 47</var>

Confused.

Self Impersonation

I can't resist but post this here... because using an adjective like "hilarious", "freaking funny" or downright <var>rolling-on-the-floor-laughing-my-ass-off</var> material to describe it would be an insult to the humor in the video itself.

US President, George W. Well today's training went exactly that way.

Although yes, it was a good day to train because all the tests were officially over after the Maths B test <var>[which I completely screwed up btw]</var>.

And the training did indeed go well because I felt the muscles begging for me to stop but yet I continued. After the training, I was barely able to walk home carrying all my luggage and I bet tomorrow morning, half the muscles in my body will be hurting way beyond the usual...
Heck, my arm hurts even as I type this!

See, what happened today was that I started with a simple warm-up leading up a flat wall. Next, feeling adventurous, I decided to do The Overhang. For those of you not in the know-how, The Overhang is the left-most of the "jutting-out" climbing walls. The thing about Overhang is that at least there are no Roof sections, the steep incline is constant all the way up.

So well, I was climbing The Overhang and doing quite well, because I reached the part where I last fell and managed to go higher. But I was forewarned that the last two moves are the most extreme ones.

Nothing <var>[Repeat: Nothing At All!]</var> could have prepared me for how difficult it really was. I managed to do a really hard drop-knee with a cross-hand to reach the second-last tile. But that's when I had to lock my left arm, which was already tired after climbing around four storeys up, and the arm couldn't hold on any longer. The last tile may not have been within reach <var>at all</var>, but it just felt disappointing to have climbed the whole darn Overhang just to fall off at the second-last tile.

Well, that's life. You don't always get it your way...

Like wtf?!

I was trying to entertain myself by watching random videos on youtube.com when I decided to search for a Pac-Man video. So what I do is type "pac man movie" instead of "pac man video" and the first result I get is this. Absolutely hilarious!

So out of pure curiosity, just to see what comes up, I did a Google Search. And the results turned up this. The IMDB has an official entry on Pac Man the Movie.

If it looks anything like the video on youtube.com, I'm gonna call up the director and the script writer personally...

What next? Tetris the movie?!

Bittersweet Ending.

To get an idea of my opinion towards the holidays and the state of mind I'm in right now, refer to this post.

So the holidays have come to an end. And it's back to school. And homework. And teachers. And notes.
Put all this together, and you get getting chased by teachers for homework because you didn't study your notes.

With school, also comes fun and enjoyment because I get to see all the great friends again but it's truly a bittersweet ending to the holidays.

As Lester said, the first day did pass by real slow. It started with me sitting-in for Chinese lesson, revising my periodic table notes. Had Chemistry Test right after that. It went quite surprisingly well, save for the last question, which was a killer.

Then moving on to the LA test. Ugh. It went horribly...I chose the question that I had revised for, hoping it would be easy. But it turned out to be crap. I'm not divulging anymore details here for the sake of those who have yet to take the test.

Had the Maths A Test today, aka test on Differentiation and Integration.
dee why dee ex. Limits.
It went quite well. Better than expected, at least. Though I didn't have the time to finish the last question, I got all the other answers correct I think. I calculated my result should be 23 out of 35. Plus minus 5 marks. =)

Anyway, watched the Brazil vs Ghana match after school today. That final goal for Brazil by that Ze Roberto, it just made me go "WTF?!" Yea. It was that insane! Watch it for yourself, you can't help but wonder how the hell in the world did that guy become a goalkeeper.

Okay I'm gonna go off and do some Physics now. Physics Test is coming up on Friday.
Well, so is the Biology Test, but I'm hopeless for Biology.

Encoded

I like codes and encryption.

Not the kind that are used for programming, but the kind that are used for secret messages. The Enigma kind.

Isn't it just brilliant how the message can be encoded in a billion different ways?
Well then, I'm off to go do more dee-why-dee-ex...

All I did in this post was rant like some idiot..Excusee me for that. The time's 0134 hrs right now and Varun's pretty sure he's gonna be screwed if he's found to be awake by his Mum right now. So guess what, Varun shall update this post tomorrow...
-----------------------

Ah okay. So maybe the so-called Official Opening Day was yesterday but heck, I'll just continue on from yesterday.

So as I was explaining the reason for the official red ribbons, it's simply because most of the elements edited weren't ready at first and I was still experimenting with HTML and trying out various tricks for this blog.

But that aside, the posts will be streaming in now. Effort will be made to update frequently but excuse me if the schoolwork doesn't allow much time. Although I'd rather blog than do schoolwork, I'm afraid the teachers and parents don't think along the same train of thoughts...

And before any vulgarities come out regarding schoolwork and how these so-called holidays are just filled to the brim with revision, I shall end the post here.

Officially Unopened

This is a notice to anyone out there who might be reading this. Further work needs to be done, that's for sure.

Links and Exit

This page will follow in the tradition of the <a href="http://triple-double-you.blogspot.com/2006/05/about.html" title="The "About" Page.">About page. It is currently an experimental page and would be developed further by the author when he deems it fit.

In the near future, this page would contain various links to other blogs, interesting sites and quirky things the author finds on the internet. Below is an example of how the links may look like...(though they would also include non-geeky links)

Get Firefox

Google

Google Guide

Google Mirror

55 Ways To Have Fun With Google

Google Is The Center OF My Internet World

Don't you just love Google? =)

Or the links could look like this...

Google is a great website!

Not enough fixation of Google?
This page should satisfy that craving. A complete listing of all Google products, minus the Betas.

Apple's ingenious!
Even when it comes to their ads.

An ingenious Flash movie on, erm, a Flash movie. It's animation vs the animator.

web.burza's site is for the kids at heart. Not forgetting his bad habits and quirks that tend to tick people off.

One of them being that the author is LAZY. A great example of how lazy he is can be seen right here in front of you - he refuses to type this out now and leave it to be done later. He's one hell of a procrastinator.

There'll be lots of text here, plus a few links. Text goes here.
